Why Jalkranti
We all know that 71 percent of the Earth's surface is covered by water. So it might seem that there is sufficient supply of water. In that case do we need to worry? Answer lies in the facts like - growing population, global warming, increasing droughts and also in the facts below, which must be considered seriously, before it’s too late.
⦁ The oceans hold up to 96.5% of all Earth’s water. Additional water also exists in rivers and lakes, ice, water vapour as well as in flora and fauna and in us - the human beings.
⦁ Only 2.5% of all Earth’s water is fresh water. However, it must not be taken for granted that all of the fresh water is available to us and can be used as drinking water.
⦁ 68.7% of total fresh water percentage is held up by glaciers and the rest of 30.1% is contained in ground-water.
⦁ So - only 1.2% is surface water and other (drinking) fresh water.
All this taken into consideration, it is obvious, there are less and less drinking water resources as a result of deforestation, global warming and urbanisation. Going forward, these resources will be further reduced. We must come to realise that water is not an inexhaustible source and that is how we must approach it.
